Where sandalwood’s fragrance comes from

Sandalwood has been prized for its fragrance for centuries. Here is what gives the wood its scent, and why it is scarce.

  • The heartwood

The dense, darker wood at the centre of a mature tree, where most of the aromatic oil collects.

  • The sapwood

The paler outer wood around it carries very little fragrance.

  • The years

Heartwood forms slowly as the tree matures, which is one reason sandalwood is scarce.

Making sandalwood paste

How a heartwood stick is used. You need a patta, the stick and a little clean water.

  1. Wet the patta

Sprinkle a few drops of water on the patta.

  2. Grind in circles

Hold the stick upright and rub it in slow circles until a smooth paste forms. Add another drop of water if it feels dry.

  3. Rinse and dry

Rinse the patta after use, and let the stick dry before you store it.

About Santerre

Santerre is a new sandalwood brand, preparing to launch.

We want sandalwood to be part of ordinary days, not saved for special occasions. Our range keeps it simple: a few forms of the wood, easy to understand and easy to use.

Questions

Are the heartwood sticks incense sticks?

No. They are solid pieces of sandalwood heartwood and are not meant to be burned. You rub them on a patta with water to make sandalwood paste.

What is a patta?

A flat base on which a sandalwood stick is rubbed with a little water to make paste.

What is heartwood?

Heartwood is the dense inner wood of a mature sandalwood tree, where most of its aromatic oil collects. The paler outer sapwood has very little fragrance.

How should I store sandalwood?

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and close the pack or bottle tightly after use.

When can I buy Santerre?

We’re preparing for launch. Prices, pack sizes and availability will appear on this site when products go on sale.
